About a year ago, specifically on January 1, 2015, a collection of time-related facts was assembled to serve as a gentle reminder of one’s age. Now, let’s take a look at an updated version:
Despite it seeming like the 21st century just began, we are already halfway to 2032.
The television series, The Wonder Years, aired from 1988 to 1993, portraying the years 1968 to 1973. If it were made today, it would cover the years 1996 to 2001. The show would highlight events like the Bush-Gore election, the rise of Britney Spears, and the 9/11 attacks. The characters in a modern version of The Wonder Years would watch shows like Friends (1994–2004), South Park (1997–present), Family Guy (1999–present), and the first season of 24 (2001–2010).
Interestingly, Family Guy first aired in January 1999, which was closer to the era of M*A*S*H (1972–1983) than to the present day.
Considering the moon landing, the films listed below were in theaters closer to the moon landing than to the present:
– Batman Returns
– A League of Their Own
– Wayne’s World
– My Cousin Vinny
– Silence of the Lambs
– Terminator 2
– Hook
– Beauty and the Beast
– The Addams Family
– Father of the Bride
– Home Alone
These movies were in theaters closer to JFK’s presidency than to the present:
– Batman
– Back to the Future 2
– The Little Mermaid
– Indiana Jones
– Honey I Shrunk the Kids
– Field of Dreams
– When Harry Met Sally
Moreover, these movies were released closer to World War II than to the present:
– The Empire Strikes Back
– The Shining
– Airplane
– Caddyshack
The legendary film, The Godfather, released in 1972, is closer in time to the 1920s than to today. Similarly:
For those born before 1973, your birth is closer to the 1920s than to today. Individuals currently 38 years old were born closer to the 1930s than to today. As for 28-year-olds and 23-year-olds, you were born closer to the ’50s and ’60s than to today, respectively.
Do you know any 84-year-olds? Their birth is further back in time from today than the 22nd century. While there are numerous people alive today who will live into the 22nd century, only two individuals alive today also lived in the 1800s.
The average age for an American woman to have her first child is 25.8. This implies that the average woman giving birth to her first child now was born in the 1990s.
Remember the year 1996? Back then, the way people viewed the ’60s is similar to how someone who is now the age you were in 1996 views the ’80s. The ’70s, from 1996’s perspective, are as distant as the ’90s are today. In 1996, the prime of Frank Sinatra was as far back in time as the Disco era is today.
Reflecting on 1980, it is closer in time to FDR, Churchill, and Hitler’s conflicts than it is to 2016.
1977 was 39 years ago, which is a quarter of the way back to the Civil War and Lincoln’s presidency.
Regarding other American presidencies, if you are a 34-year-old American, your early childhood occurred during the Reagan administration, you finished elementary school during Bush Sr.’s presidency, and high school coincided with Clinton’s term. A nine-year-old today perceives George W. Bush the way you view Jimmy Carter, and for them, the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal is exactly as far back as Watergate is for you. Reagan, for them, is just as distant as Eisenhower’s presidency is for you.
Lastly, one of the cherished childhood movies, Back to the Future, depicted a present time of 1985. The date the movie used as the distant future? October 21, 2015. A time that has now passed.
