It’s common knowledge that top boxers earn vast sums of money. However, when news broke about the payout for the recent Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight—$210 million for Mayweather and $142 million for Pacquiao—I had to reread the figures multiple times to truly grasp the enormity of it. Mayweather raked in $210 million for a 36-minute bout. That equates to $5.8 million per minute or just under $100,000 per second. The thought of earning $100,000 a second, even if it meant taking hits from Pacquiao, is mind-boggling.
To put Mayweather’s $210 million into perspective, consider that it surpasses the total earnings of legends like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods combined. It also exceeds the entire 2015 salary of the Boston Red Sox, as well as the combined salary caps of the NFL and NBA for 2015. Even when you tally up the career earnings of tennis greats like Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Roger Federer, it falls short by $37 million compared to Mayweather’s one-night haul.
To illustrate the magnitude of Mayweather’s payout further, a graphic was created to show items or earnings that fall short of $210 million:
