The Blue Jays broke camp with the idea of letting the newer fitter version of Edwin Encarnacion play third base. Unfortunately, the erratic throwing and fielding which has been EE for the last 2 years is still there. Manager John Farrell gave him a day off on Saturday and put him back out there Sunday. On a team with lots of Outfield depth, it will be hard to find a place to put Edwin other than DH if this continues much longer. Unfortunately, Edwin has a very unorthodox style of throwing and doesn't repeat the same motion 2 times in a row. He has developed some very sloppy habits, and needs a complete overhaul.
1. Takes the ball on the side more than he should.
2. Doesn't surround the ball well.
3. Poor throwing mechanics allows the ball to sail.
These issues will always be there and unfortunately, Edwin continue to be a major problem for Toronto's infield defense.
Options: Jayson Nix - not a long term solutions but he has hit 28 Home Runs in just over 600 MLB at bats. His defense is excellent and if he could hit 260-270 would be a real option at the hot corner.
Jose Bautista - Jose is a very good thirdsacker, his range and arm strength give the Jays a real option. I think the Jays, are more concerned about the wear on is body and keeping him healthy.
Brett Lawrie is the long term option and given the spring he had, this could be something that might happen sooner rather than later.
